From contemporary looks inspired by the catwalk to the shoemaker’s craft, perfected over time, one name says it all: Clarks. As the world number one in ‘everyday footwear’, Clarks designs, innovates, manufactures and sell more than 50 million pairs of shoes every year.
Founded in 1825 by brothers Cyrus and James, Clarks is still a privately owned business and based in their birthplace of Street, Somerset, UK. Today Clarks is global business, selling shoes in over 35 countries around the world.
In the archive of more than 22,000 Clarks styles are shoes that have sparked a revolution, defined a generation and captured the imagination. Like the iconic Clarks Desert Boot. Designed by Nathan Clark, launched in 1950, its appeal endures to this day.
Converse began in 1908 as a rubber shoe company specialising in galoshes. Soon after, they’ve started using the rubber to make sneakers. In 1920, Converse renamed their canvas basketball sneaker the “All Star” with the Chuck Taylor (or “Chucks” as we learned to refer to them) becoming the most popular. Converse made their sneakers with the intention to sink jump shots on the court. But it’s fans started to wear them wherever they wanted. On stages, for skating, as fashion or at work doing everything to them and in them. There’re not many shoes of such continuing relevance within pop culture like Converse are and their story continues. The Jack Purcell is one of Tuffi Shop’s favourite in all of its variations.
Being the inventor of “stone washing” Edwin revolutionized the entire denim industry. The brand was established in Japan by Mr Tsunemi in the late 1940s with a strong passion for denim. At first he started to import them directly from the United States as no denim was manufactured in Japan by that time. Living up to one of Nippon’s core values and within less than 5 years Mr. Tsunemi made sure that domestically manufactured denim became available for the first time in Japan in 1951, but it takes him another decade to produce his first pair of jeans from it. It is the world’s heaviest ringspun denim jeans (16oz), featuring the famous three-colour rainbow selvedge, which is still being used today. In the 1970s Edwin becomes the first company in the world to develop an ‘old wash’, designed to replicate denim which has been worn from its rigid, unwashed state traditionally designed for workwear due to its durability. Little did anyone know by then, that the process of ‘washing’ would become a standard for the whole denim industry until today. Edwin Europe was founded at the beginning of the millennium to develop exclusive product for the European market and bring a selection of Japanese items to a new audience.
